A monthly budget is a plan for the money you expect to receive and the things you expect to pay for. It is also a place to notice when real life turns out differently.

Start with money you can reasonably expect.

Write down take-home income for the month. Keep possible bonuses or uncertain payments separate until you know they are coming. If your income changes from month to month, start with the essentials and update the plan when money arrives.

Give the predictable bills their own space.

List housing, utilities, transport, subscriptions and other recurring costs. Use the actual amounts from your statements where possible. Add the payment dates if timing affects how much you need in your account.

Make room for flexible spending.

Groceries, eating out and personal spending can be harder to estimate. Look at a recent typical month, then choose a plan you can realistically follow. Include irregular costs you know are coming, such as a gift or annual renewal.

Check the difference.

Subtract planned spending and savings from your income. If the result is negative, revisit the plan before the month begins. A positive result is simply money you have not yet assigned; decide whether to keep it as a buffer or give it a purpose.

Come back once a week.
